Biomechanics of the Big Three

By Omar AbdohUpdated

What this chapter covers

This single sentence contradicts most of what you have been told, and it is the most useful thing in this chapter. Your skeleton is not the same as your training partner's. Femur length, hip socket depth and orientation, torso proportions, ankle mobility, and arm length all vary enormously between individuals — and every one of them changes what optimal technique looks like.

Coaching cues that transformed one person's squat can actively harm another's, not because the cue is wrong, but because it was designed for a different skeleton.

In this chapter

  • The One Universal Principle: Moment Arms
  • The Squat: Your Femurs Decide
  • The Bench Press: The Arch Is Not Cheating
  • The Deadlift: Conventional Versus Sumo
  • Bracing: The Valsalva Manoeuvre
  • Execution Checklist
